A Biras Note | Dear Biras Friends, The summer has fully arrived in Virgin Gorda and the heat is rising!
Luckily, our tradewinds keep the cooler air from the ocean blowing over the grounds at Biras Creek so it remains pleasant throughout the day. Last night we were treated to nature's fireworks as a lightning storm filled the air with bright flashes out over the ocean. There is always something to admire and enjoy in this beautiful part of the world.
We are also welcoming guests from all over at this time of year. In the past month, we have had lovely couples from Russia, France, the UK, Ireland, Spain, Brazil, the Netherlands and Canada. While the winter season is busy with guests from the Northeast US and New England, the summer seems to bring down more people from the Midwest and Southeast US. Several Californians have also made the long trek east to our little island. Another group that visits at this time of year are neighboring islanders from Puerto Rico, the USVI, St. Martin and Barbados. Even a few Tortolans have come over for a night or two respite from that busier island!
One of the qualities I most enjoy about Biras is the way that our guests socialize amongst each other. It is this tradition of sharing travel stories, comparing "small world" encounters and just enjoying talking to someone from another part of the world (or maybe just the next town over!) that makes this small resort special. It does seem that Biras guests share many common interests that allow conversations and new friendships to develop.
I hope to greet you and introduce you to a fellow guest and newfound friend very soon! All my best, Rik Blyth General Manager rblyth@biras.com

| Staff Spotlight: Captain Blondie | Dale Wheatley, affectionately known as Captain Blondie, is a man with two loves, the wide open waters of the ocean and farming. He is lucky enough to be able to enjoy his two passions everyday – one by captaining the boat “Princess” driving guests to and from Trellis Bay and two, by owning and running his own farm on Virgin Gorda.
Growing up on a farm on Virgin Gorda, Captain Blondie developed his love for fishing and spending time on the water. Before long, he had earned the nickname “Blondie” for the salt water turning his hair blonde after hours and hours of diving.
“When I first started driving for Biras, it was just a trip here and there, and then another, until I was doing all the transfers for the Resort. I enjoy driving the boat because it is exciting to meet new people everyday,” he says of his 21 year tenor at the Resort. But after 14 years of captaining “Princess”, he thought it was about time to start a farm too.
Seven years ago, the Dale Wheatley Agriculture Center was born. Captain Blondie started his pig farm with just two pigs, which has now bloomed into an average of 200 pigs on the farm at any given time, plus 2 pet pigs, 2 dogs, 4 boars, 40 sheep, and 7 goats!
“The Pigs live in the Pig Hotel” says Captain Blondie, pointing to the structure on the hillside overlooking the Caribbean Sea. “They have the prettiest view of anyone on the island.”
So the same man that may tell you to sit down on the boat, is also the same man who hand-fed his pet pig Miss Piggy, the runt of a litter, until she was old enough to eat on her own. And so Miss Piggy wouldn’t get cold at night, he would wrap her in a towel and place her in his bed every night for the first month of Miss Piggy’s life. Now Miss Piggy, and her sister Refugee, (named because her mother died during birth, so Captain Blondie decided he was her refuge) now tip the scales at 700 pounds and spend lazy afternoons in the shade of his porch with sheep as companions.
